An online Quiz is a fun way to enjoy time together – whether it’s with friends, family, or colleagues.
This step-by-step guide shows you exactly how to create your own online Quiz.
A good quiz starts with a theme. Think about what fits best with the group you’re making the quiz for.
Will you go for a classic pub quiz with a mix of topics? Or do you prefer one clear theme, like music, sports, or the ‘90s?
If you don’t know the group very well – or if it’s a mix of ages and interests – a Pub Quiz with different rounds and varied topics usually works best.
You can create a Quiz on any topic. However, there are a few themes that always remain popular:
It’s not just the theme – the structure also makes your quiz fun. A good rule of thumb is 5 to 7 rounds with 8 to 10 questions each. That way, you keep it lively without making it drag on too long.
For a short quiz – like during Friday drinks or a quick activity with friends or family – a simpler setup with fewer rounds often works best.
| Type of Quiz | Quiz questions | Structure |
| Short Quiz | 25 questions | rounds of 5 questions |
| Standard Quiz | 40 questions | rounds of 8 questions |
| XL Quiz | 70 questions | rounds of 10 questions |
There are many tools available for creating an online quiz. The four most popular are:
ClassicQuiz is our personal favourite – and not just because we work with them. The tool is clear, user-friendly, offers many fun question types and plenty of options for personalisation.
One big advantage of ClassicQuiz compared to other tools is how easy it is to get started. You can simply sign up for a 30-day account. It ends automatically after that, and you decide if you want to continue. No need to commit to a full year right away – perfect if you’re planning a one-time quiz or just want to use it occasionally.
Already know you’ll be making quizzes more often? Then go for the yearly subscription right away – it costs just a fraction of what similar tools charge.

Mentimeter is best known for interactive presentations, but you can also use it to create quizzes. This can be useful if you want to combine a quiz with a presentation or brainstorming session.
The tool is less comprehensive than ClassicQuiz or Kahoot! when it comes to Quiz features, but sufficient for a simple Qquiz. To create a complete online quiz, you need an annual subscription.

| Plan | Cost | Max. number of players | Features |
| Free | € 0 | Up to 50 players | Basic functionality, limited number of questions per presentation |
| Basic | € 156/year (≈ € 13/month) | Unlimited | Import slides, export results to Excel |

AhaSlides is a modern and intuitive tool, similar to Mentimeter, but with more quiz features. It offers different question types, like putting answers in the right order or matching pairs.
AhaSlides is a great tool for interactive meetings or online events. And for a Quiz, it’s a nice alternative if you want to try something different from the big names. Just a heads-up: AhaSlides only offers yearly subscriptions, so it’s less ideal if you’re planning a one-time Quiz.

| Plan | Cost | Max. number of players | Features |
| Free | € 0 | Up to 50 players | Max 5 quiz questions, basic functionality |
| Essential | € 87/year (≈ € 7,25/month) | Up to 100 players | Unlimited number of questions, standard features |

Whichever tool you use, you can usually decide for yourself what the rules are and how many points a question is worth. For example, do you award more points for an open or difficult question? Or does each question receive the same number of points? Think carefully about this before you start creating the questions.
Create one or more slides to start your Quiz. For example, explain how many rounds and questions there are, and how the Quiz works. This way, participants will know immediately what to expect. You can also add an introduction slide for each round of the Quiz. Are you having the Quiz presented by a Quizmaster? If so, you can also share this information with him or her only.

Once you’ve chosen the right tool, you’ll know which question types are available for your Quiz — and then it’s time to start creating your questions!
Open questions where players have to type the answer usually take a bit more time,
while multiple choice or true/false questions go faster. If you’re using a video or music clip, make sure to give players a few extra seconds too.
| Type of Quiz | Duration* | Number of Quiz questions | Suitbale for |
| Short Quiz | 30 minutes | 25 Quiz questions | Ideal for a quick, light-hearted activity during drinks or as part of a larger programme. |
| Standard Quiz | 45 minutes | 40 Quiz questions | Perfect for a fun evening with friends, family or colleagues. A full Quiz experience, but not too long. Easy to extend to an hour with a short break, or at a leisurely pace. |
| XL Quiz | 90 minutes | 70 Quiz questions | For the authentic Pub Quiz experience or a large event. Includes introduction and break. |
* This schedule leaves you some time for the introduction of the Quiz, prize draw and – especially for longer quizzes – a break in between.
Of course, you can adjust the pace to your liking. Want to move through the quiz more quickly? Just shorten the answer time. Prefer a more relaxed vibe? Give extra time for answers or add an extra break.
There’s nothing more annoying than tech issues or confusing questions during your Quiz.
By testing everything in advance, you avoid stress and make sure it all runs smoothly.
Try running your Quiz with a small group first, or ask someone to take a critical look. That way, you’ll quickly spot any areas that could use improvement.

| ✅ Do’s | ❌ Don’ts |
| Ensure a logical structure in rounds | Too long Quiz (people lose interest) |
| Use images, audio, and video for an enhanced experience | Text questions only |
| Keep your audience in mind (difficulty level) | Too many inside jokes or niche questions |
| Test the quiz in advance | Relying too much on improvisation during the quiz |
| Make it personal (e.g. a round about your team or company) | Only using standard questions |

Tip: would you like to organise your own online Pub Quiz, but don’t have the time to create everything yourself? Then a ready-made Quiz is ideal. You will find various options in our shop. And the best part? You can also purchase an editable Quiz, allowing you to add your own personal touch without having to put in a lot of work.
In the Netherlands, the word “Quiz” usually refers to any game with questions and answers. A Pub Quiz is a special type: a fun, social quiz with multiple rounds and a mix of topics. It was originally designed to be played in pubs, but these days it’s just as popular at home with friends or family and for companies as a team activity.
On average, a quiz round has 8 to 10 questions. That’s long enough to keep things exciting, but short enough to hold everyone’s attention. If you’re hosting a shorter quiz, you can go for fewer questions per round — that way, you still keep things varied and fun.
For a one-hour Pub Quiz, aim for around 40 to 50 questions. That leaves enough time for a quick intro, some explanation, a short break if needed, and the prize ceremony.
Yes and no. ChatGPT can help you come up with Quiz questions and put rounds together. However, you should always double-check the questions for accuracy and make sure they fit your audience. In our experience, a human selection works best to create a good balance in a Quiz. ChatGPT is especially useful as a source of inspiration and for clearly wording your questions.
There are several great alternatives to Kahoot!, such as ClassicQuiz, Mentimeter, and AhaSlides. ClassicQuiz is the best option if you want to create online quizzes. Mentimeter and AhaSlides are more focused on interactive presentations.
